ADAPT Formative Study Report Launch, Uganda

Kampala, Uganda: Makerere University College of Education and External Studies, GESCI and University of Notre Dame’s Global Center for the Development of the Whole Child launched a report on utilisation of present and past learning assessments in Uganda.

This launch brought together participants from the Ministry of Education and Sports, National Curriculum Development Centre, Makerere University and Civil Society Organisations under the Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI)

Speaking at the launch while welcoming the particiapants, Prof. Anthony Mugagga, the ADAPT Knowledge Champion, Uganda said: "Things have gone a little bit astray, but the challenges remain that should we change the curriculum,the assessment or the way teacher deliver lessons?'He went further to say that assessments are key in shaping the education curriculum.

Mr. George Muteekanga,Assisstant Commissioner,Private Education,Ministry of Education and Sports supported Prof. Mugagga's remarks by saying there is need to incorporate assessment of life skills in the curriculum and looking at ways to have each region customise an assessment rubric for their region.

From the study, we learnt that there is a poor attitude towards learning assessments among stakeholders.Many stakeolders appreciate the need for 21st Century but their attention was found to be on the end of cycle examinations.

This study aimed at identifying the best ways to support policy makers to integrate Assessments of Life Skills and Values in East Africa (ALiVE) learning assessments into data-driven decisions tomimprove curriculum design and delivery.

The ADAPT project is implemented by a Consortium of 3 partners: GESCI, Makerere University College of Education and External Studies and University of Notre Dame’s Global Center for the Development of the Whole Child and funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) under the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) program and is implemented in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
