GESCI partners with UNESCO to train special needs education teachers in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda

Under the framework of the Accessible Digital Textbooks (ADT) project, focusing on promoting inclusive education through accessible digital textbooks, the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa is supporting the improvement of equitable and inclusive education through holistic ICT integration.

The project aims to support the training of teachers on Assistive Technologies (ATs), the utilization of Accessible Digital Textbooks (ADTs) and in adapting content to ensure inclusive education and access to information for learners with disabilities in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

UNESCO has commissioned GESCI to carry out the following interventions:

  1. Support development/reviewing of National Policy for Inclusive ICTs in Education for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Kenya and Rwanda (Baseline Survey)
  2. Support awareness creation on implementation of policy/guidelines on inclusive education and access to information for Persons with Disabilities in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
  3. Support training of special teachers (ECD) on Assistive Technologies to ensure inclusive education and access to information for PwDs in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda and
  4. Support training of teachers on the use of interactive digital textbooks in teaching and adapting content for improving learning outcomes in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.

GESCI will be developing training materials that will be used in the training.

The ADT project is funded by the United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD).
