eKitabu in collaboration with Teachers Service Commission (TSC), CEMASTEA and Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) has come up with an award for the best innovative teachers in classroom practices in mathematics and sciences. This award is known as the iTOYA Award; i for ICT Integration in Teaching and Learning and TOYA for Teacher of the Year Award Maxwell Kayesi, a Physics teacher at Karuri High School in Kiambu County , one of the schools participating in the African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) Programme scooped the ICT Teacher of the year Award of the year.Mr Kayesi is a School Based Coordinator at the Karuri overseeing all (ADSI) project activities in terms of ICT Integration. Kayesi was awarded during the 43^rd annual principals conference attended by over 9,000 the principals from all public secondary schools in Kenya the teachers service commission secretariat led by Dr Lydia Nzomo chairperson and other senior staff, staff from the ministry of education led by the cabinet secretary for education ambassador Amina Mohamed, sponsors and other stake holders in the education. The Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya H.E William Ruto also graced the last session of the event. “The competition started at school level where I competed against 55 teachers integrating ICT, I then proceeded to the sub-county level where I competed against 22 other teachers within the Kiambaa sub-county I emerged the best overall, I proceeded to the county level competition which was held in kiambu township where I competed against 12 other teachers who had won in their respective sub-counties. I emerged the best ICT teacher in Kiambu county and proceeded to the Mt Kenya Regional finals held in May 2018 at Nyeri education headquarters where I competed against 6 representatives from Nyeri county, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Meru, Embu, Nyandarua and Laikipia counties. I won and became the Mt kenya region ICT champion 2018 to represent the region in the national championships. The national championships were held in June 2018 during the Kenya secondary school’s heads association (KESSHA) conference at wild waters Mombasa county. I emerged the national champion in ICT integration in teaching learning process.” Mr. Kayesi remarked. Other than ICT integration the award criteria entailed other domains such as Teacher professional development, teacher performance and appraisal, teacher involvement in learner lifelong activities and co-curricular activities and teacher collaboration with stakeholder to mention just but a few. Mr Kayesi demonstrated using  a seven-minute power point presentation on how he integrate ICT in his day to day classroom teaching to over 10,000 National delegates at the conference. ADSI is an innovative ICT Integration initiative seeking to transform teaching and learning by integrating ICTs through teacher professional development and whole-school use of current technologies. What role has ADSI played in Maxwell’s career as a teacher ? He further said that “The Africa digital school initiative program played a major role in me realizing this achievement, since I joined the program, I have gained a lot of knowledge on how to integrate ICT in the classroom, ADSI equipped me with the pedagogical skills such as designing an exemplary ICT integrated lessons from the lesson plans design, presentation, use of OERs, coming up with learner centered lessons incorporating the 21^st century skills all this aligned to TPACK skill set. The peer to peer lesson review has enhanced collaboration with my fellow teachers from within the school and beyond the school to ensure that gaps are identified and strategies on how to mitigate this gaps in our day to day teaching. The virtual online platform has proved to be a great opportunity for me to showcase and learn from other ICT champions across the country. The program has further enhanced my professional development from an e-initial stage through to e-enabled, e-confident and now headed to an e-mature teacher with the aim of being a digital teacher of distinction by the end of the program. Furthermore, the enormous support from the GESCI team; Christine Akello, my Project Coordinator, John Napua, my online tutor, and Madam Esther Wachira the ADSI project coordinator Kenya has seen me master the art of being an exemplary ICT integration teacher.” In his parting shot, Mr Kayesi said to other integrating ICTs that “ICT can never replace a good teacher, but ICT in the hands of a good teacher is transformational.” Congratulations Mr. Maxwell Vincent Kayesi!
