GESCI, in partnership with The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), held the  Regional Teachers’ Conference in the counties of Nyamira, Kiambu, Taita Taveta and Narok, Kenya. Over 700 secondary teachers successfully completed the first cycle of digital technology as part of the roll-out of African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) Programme being implemented by GESCI in Kenya. Representatives of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Teachers Service Commission, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and teachers from the four counties attended the event. The practically-orientated conference focus on the specific application of technology in the processes of teaching and learning. This conference is combined with on-going online training over an extended period to assist the teachers to become experts in the integration of ICT in their daily work in the classroom. In total, over 800 teachers from 4 counties in Kenya are taking part in this innovative initiative. A delightful bunch of teachers shared their experiences after year 1 of integrating ICTs in teaching. Ms Beatrice Mbogo, a Mathematics teacher at Voi Girls Educational Centre noted that her learners’ attitude towards Mathematics has changed since incorporation of ICTs.Ms Mbogo was also happy to report that their performance in the subject has really improved. Speaking at the conference in Nyamira County KICD CEO, Dr. Julius Ouma Jwan, commended GESCI for running this project in secondary schools which will allow learners from primary schools who have exposure to technology to continue to experience and benefit from the value of ICT in learning. Dr. Jwan requested the teachers to take digital literacy seriously as ICT skills will enable them to create technology-incorporated content to enrich their learning. Teachers Service Commission (TSC)) Director, Kiambu County , Ms. Lilian Mwangi , mentioned that Kiambu was producing great ICT teachers in the country. She was happy to note that the teacher who was awarded Best ICT teacher in 2017 nationally was from her county and a beneficiary of the ADSI programme. Narok County, James Nyaga, said the proposed new school curriculum which takes effect next year recognized the need for students to have up to date ICT skills and this programme would go a long way in providing teachers  with ICT skills to handle this new education programme. Mr. Nyaga applauded the programme saying it is in line with the Ministries of Education vision to digitizem  schools and curriculum and promised teachers who graduate in the program that they stand a higher chance of being promoted.  The teachers’ conference is part of a wider implementation and institutionalisation of the programme in Kenya. The African Digital Schools Initiative is funded by Mastercard Foundation, Canada.
