The Ministry of Education,Science and Technology (MoEST), The President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG)  and The Global E- Schools and Communities Initiative (GESCI) are partners in the newly launched African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) Programme in Tanzania. The launch took place on Tuesday 10th October at Kibaha Secondary School in Kibaha Town,Pwani Region.The project, which will run for 3 years aims at transforming secondary schools into Digital Schools of Distinction (DSD) . Those present included; representatives Ministry of Education Science and Technology, representatives of the local education authorities, teachers and students from the Morogoro and  Pwani regions in Tanzania. The newly designed and highly innovative programme is being rolled in 40 secondary schools in two regions, Pwani and Morogoro, and will reach 1200 teachers and 40,000 students of STEM and other subjects. The Mastercard Foundation is funding the initiative Dr. Leornard Akwilapo,Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Science and Technology said that the project is timely and Tanzanian schools, teachers and students will benefit significantly from membership of the inititive.He commended GESCI for designing and implementing such an innovative model of ICT-led  innovation which will enhance teacher professional skills and enrich learning in addition to ICT-enabled whole school improvement.He said that the Ministry looked forward to closely collaborating with GESCI in the sucessful rollout of the programme in Tanzania. Jerome Morrissey, CEO of GESCI said that GESCI has had a long and productive partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science and technology of Tanzania and was delighed to bring this initiative and investment to Tanzanian secondary schools. He said that GESCI sees this launch as the first stage in a much wider national of the programme in Tanzania. The Regional Administrative Secretary Mr. Zuberi Samataba was also pleased that an ICT project is being launched in his region.He noted that it will encourage innovation among locals as the students and teachers learn the use. The Regional Education Officer,Pwani Region,Ms. Germana Mung’aho stressed the issue of ensuring women and girls take part in such projects. The launch in Tanzania is part of a wider implementation of the programme which includes Kenya and Cote d’Ivoire.This initiative is funded by Mastercard Foundation.
