23 March, 2016,Nairobi: GESCI held an experts’ meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, to kick off planning and preparatory work for the launching of the African Digital Schools Initiative (ADSI) Project in Kenya in October 2016. ADSI seeks to build digital schools of distinction and to improve STEM teaching and learning through the use of ICT. It is designed to build secondary - level student 21st century skills and enhance teaching practices in a way that is responsive to the needs of the market place and to the emerging knowledge economies and societies. The 1^st Expert Working Group (EWG) Meeting brought together participants from key institutions in the education and ICT sectors in Kenya to ensure their participation at all stages of the project development and planning process i.e. the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development the Kenya Institute for Special Education, The ICT Integration Team of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Kenyatta University, the University of Nairobi School of Continuing and Distance Education, the Kenya Education Management Institute ,the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology in Africa, Field and Other Services the Education Standards Quality Assurance Council and the Kenya Institute of Special Education. GESCI’s ADSI interim project manager and education specialist were also present. The meeting aimed at briefing participants on the ADSI project, creating a common understanding on the roles and responsibilities of the Expert Working Group and forming sub-working groups that will guide the different areas of module development. The EWG will meet occasionally to monitor the implementation of the project on an ongoing basis. At County level, a School Support Team whose members will be drawn from the County Education Administration management will also support the project. The ADSI project builds on and will use the model developed by GESCI for the Strengthening Innovation and Practice in Secondary Education (SIPSE) project implemented in 80 Kenyan schools in 2016-2020. In Kenya, the ADSI project will be implemented in 80 schools in 4 counties over a period of 5 years. . 800 Science, Technology English and Mathematics teachers will be trained. ADSI will also train 1200 teachers of other subjects. A total of 40,000 STEM and 80,000 students of other subjects will be reached. The ADSI Project will also be implemented in Tanzania and Côte d’Ivoire.
