What We Do
The overall objective of GeSCI's work is to ensure that countries are empowered with the capacity to make clear, strategic and visionary decisions and to develop strategies and plans for the proper use of ICTs in Education to advance their overall education and development objectives in the context of the knowledge society. To achieve this objective, GeSCI's work focuses on providing strategic advice and building strategic capacity on a system-wide (whole education sector) basis for long term sustainability and not on direct implementation of ICT programmes.
Nationally
GeSCI engages directly with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and other ministries relevant to the development of ICTs, Education and the Knowledge Society such as those responsible for science and technology, energy or finance. GeSCI works with these MoEs and other relevant government agencies to understand the potential and limitations of ICTs, helping them to make informed and rational decisions on ICT infrastructure and deployment based on their educational objectives. GeSCI supports the country in developmental visioning, planning and policy development, sharing promising and established practices, developing operational and guidance frameworks and in formulating strategies to create enabling environments for harnessing ICTs for effective teaching and learning.
We provide a range of services to MoEs intent on leveraging the potential of ICT to improve the quality of teaching and learning in their education systems. We provide strategic-support to our partners on a range of ICT related issues including:
- Educational Management and ICT (including Monitoring and Evaluation)
- ICT infrastructure, Connectivity and Accessibility
- Integration of ICT into Teaching and Learning
- Teacher Education and ICT
- Educational Content and ICT
- And more....
Regionally
Regionally GeSCI facilitates knowledge sharing and building among country partners through the development of communities of such as the African Knowledge Exchange. These communities hold space for governments, practitioners, the business community and researches who wish to listen and to be heard by their peers and the international community on a range of Knowledge Society and ICT in Education issues.
Globally
In the global forum, GeSCI seeks synergies with organisations that are promoting Knowledge and Innovations for Development,ICT4D and ICT4E. GeSCI is dedicated to advancing the principles and goals of the WSIS and the Global Alliance on ICT for Development (UN GAID). GeSCI will also seek strategic partnerships with organisations such as UNESCO, WEF, InfoDev and WITFOR, and the World Bank, with a view to sharing information about good practices, tools and coordinating activities and resources. The knowledge that GeSCI generates also benefits local, regional and global organisations and the global ICT in Education community by informing their own practices and policies.
