What We Do
The overall objective of GESCI's work is to ensure that countries are empowered with the capacity to make clear, strategic and visionary decisions and to develop strategies and plans for the proper use of ICTs in Education, Science, Technology and Innovation systems to advance their overall education and development objectives in the context of the knowledge society. To achieve this objective, GESCI assists governments to develop professional, leadership and institutional capcity across Education and STI systems utilising the potential of ICT.
Nationally
GESCI engages directly with the Ministry of Education (MoE), Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Information and Communication, Ministry of Youth Affairs and other ministries mandated to utilise ICT in and through policy implementation. GESCI works with government partners and agencies to understand the potential and limitations of ICT, helping them to make informed and rational decisions on ICT infrastructure and deployment based on their objectives, and assisting them in the implementation process.
We assist our partners in the following ways:
- Conducting National Needs Assessments of ICT in Education and STI sectors
- Developing Teacher, Lecturer and Instructor Competency Standards
- Developing Frameworks for Teacher, Lecturer and Instructor Competency Development
- Developing models for Leadership in ICT capacity building programs at a national and regional level
- Integrating monitoring and evaluation for ICT in Education and STI into strategic implementation plans
- Developing national ICT in Education and STI strategies and plans
- Facilitating ICT in Education, STI policy development processes
Regionally
Regionally GESCI is implementing the African Leadership in ICT (ALICT) program on behalf of the African Union Commission (AUC). The ALICT program is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland1 and will develop a group of African ICT, Education, Science and Technology (S&T) and Knowledge Society potential and future leaders by building their capacity across a number of ICT and leadership domains.
Globally
GESCI is dedicated to advancing the principles and goals of the WSIS and the Global Alliance on ICT for Development (UN GAID). GESCI forms and seeks to form strategic partnerships with organisations such as UNECA, the AUC, UNESCO, WEF, InfoDev and WITFOR, and the World Bank, with a view to sharing information about good practices, tools and coordinating activities and resources. The knowledge that GESCI generates also benefits local, regional and global organisations and the global ICT in Education and STI community by informing their own practices and policies.
